Priest dies in Jesus' place

A 16-year-old Turkish boy convicted of the murder of an Italian Roman Catholic priest in February, said at his trial that he shot the priest by mistake while aiming at an icon of Jesus Christ on a wall of the church in the Black Sea city of Trabzon where the killing took place.So why did he shoot twice, then? And is that really an excuse?
